December 4, 1986

Pre-Broadway premiere at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, CA.

Ran for 50 performances.

Broadway Premiere at the Martin Beck Theatre.

Closed after 765 performances on September 3, 1989. Nominated for ten Tony Awards, won 3 for Best Score (Stephen Sondheim), Best Book (James Lapine) and Best Actress in a Musical (Joanna Gleason)

The song "No One Is Alone" is added to the production mid-run.

November 9, 1997

10th Anniversary Benefit performance at the Broadway Theatre in NY, featuring most of the original Broadway cast.

November 1988 - September 1989

National Tour across the United States. Set was entirely reconstructed and some changes to the script and story were made.

September 25, 1990

West End premiere at the Phoenix Theatre.

Closed after 197 performances on February 23, 1991. Received seven Olivier Award nominations and won two for Best Actress in a Musical (Imelda Staunton) and Best Director of a Musical (Richard Jones).

The song "Our Little World" was added between the Witch and Rapunzel.

November 16, 1998

London revival at the Donmar Warehouse.

Closed after 3 months on February 13, 1999. Nominated for Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production; won for Best Actress in a Musical (Sophie Thompson).

April 2002

Revival at Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. Later opens as a Broadway Revival at the Broadhurst Theatre on April 30, 2002.


The script featured revisions by James Lapine such as the addition of a second wolf and the portrayal of Milky White by a live performer in intricate costume.

Closed after 279 performances on December 29, 2002. Won Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical and Best Lighting Design.

June 2007

Revival at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London for a limited run from June 14 - 30, 2007.

Mixed opera, musical theatre, and film/television actors. The second Sondheim musical to be performed at the Opera House, the first being Sweeney Todd in 2003.

August 2010

Production at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre of England for 6-week limited run from August 6 - September 11, 2010. 

Was actually performed outdoors in a wooded area. Narrator character was cast as young boy who gets lost in the woods after an argument with family.


Won Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and received a nomination for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical (Michael Xavier).

Summer 2012

Transferred production from Regent's Park to the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, NY. Featured American cast and new designers.

Discussion of potential transfer to Broadway; did not because of scheduling conflicts.

December 25, 2014

Theatrical film adaptation (directed by Rob Marshall) released in theaters.


Received Academy Award nominations for best Supporting Actress (Meryl Streep), Best Production Design, and Best Costume Design.

July 2019

Production by the Hollywood Bowl for its annual fully staged musical event for a limited run from July 26 – 28.


Featured performances from Skylar Astin, Sierra Boggess, and Sutton Foster.

The original Broadway cast production and the Regent's Park production were each filmed in their entirety.
